Honors Reception and UPE Induction Held for Computer Science Students

| From L to R: Ihab AbuZayda, Jack Powell, Jane Meyers, Derrick Southernland, Mathew Campbell | On April 21st, five Computer and Information Sciences students were honored for their outstanding contributions to the department and 23 students were inducted into the Tennessee Alpha Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon at East Tennessee State University.
Outstanding Student awards are given each spring to one student in each of the following levels: Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Graduate. One "Outstanding Computer Science Student" is also named. This year's honorees are:
Jane Meyers - Outstanding Computer Science Student (graduating Senior)
Joseph Jackson Powell - Sophomore
Matthew David Campbell - Junior
Derrick Scott Southerland - Senior
Ihab AbuZayda - Graduate
Eighteen students were nominated for the honor and all are included in the 2005 -2006 Wall of Fame. Nominees were Ihab AbuZayda, Matthew David Campbell, Daniel Wayne Cooke, Janice Ann Derting, Daniel G Devers, Robert Thomas Dorsey, III, David Albert Drayer, Daniel L Farley, Jeffrey Scott Goulder, Robert Colby Hall, Robert Henry, Jonathan Lee Leonard, Jane Kathryn Meyers, Joseph Jackson Powell, Brandy Michelle Sayles, Derrick Scott Sutherland, Daniel Gordon Sutton, and Kevin Lucas Tinn.
UPE Induction Ceremony
During the reception, 23 students were inducted into the Tennessee Alpha Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon. Each year, juniors, seniors and graduate students meeting the eligibility requirements and receiving the recommendation of the faculty are invited to join UPE. The initiation is held in the Spring of each academic year during our annual CSCI Honors Reception. Members of UPE receive a one-year student membership in ACM, a certificate and a lapel pin with the UPE insignia. The department also recognizes the achievement of these students by providing them with an honor cord to be worn at the commencement ceremony to signify their membership in UPE.

Ellis, Paul Giblock, Kapunza Elizabeth Kinunda, David LaBissoniere, David May, Joseph Miller, Joseph L. Pearce, Terry Field Ragan, Raymond L. Shetley, Daniel Sutton, Matt Vollrath, Ihab AbuZayda, Josephine Dairai Bwawa, Daniel Grant Devers, Charles David Kilgore, Thomas Morgan Jr., Ben Pachol, Brandy Sayles.
UPE was first organized at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, in 1967. The international organization now consists of chapters in various colleges and universities in North America and overseas.
The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both
the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Computing and Information Disciplines. UPE is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS).
UPE is the first and only, existing international honor society in the Computing and Information Disciplines. It has received endorsements from the two largest computer organizations in the world, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS).
