5th and 6th Grade Girls Learn About Science and Technology
The annual Girls in Science and Technology (GIST) camp was held in Gilbreath and Nicks Halls from June 9 – 13 and June 23 – 27. The first week was for rising 5th grade girls and the second was for rising 6th grade girls, some of whom had attended camp the previous year. Twenty-nine girls attended from the Tri-Cities and beyond.
The activities for the camp were designed to encourage them to study science and technology and to consider careers in those fields. The girls made drawings, a presentation, and a journal using a computer, developed 3D worlds using Alice, made a necklace containing their DNA, and learned about local plants and computer music.
Kellie Price, Jessica Smith, Sonya Batchelder, Sarah Huggins, Heather Haley, and Sam Burke from the Computer Science Department helped lead the camp, and they were assisted by Brooks Pond, Julie Drumond, and Kathy Creekmore from the College of Pharmacy and local botanist Betty Smith.
