Annual Honors Reception
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences held its annual honors reception on April 13, 2012. Five students were honored for their valuable contributions to the department, and sixteen students were invited to join Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the International Honor Society for Computer and Information Disciplines at East Tennessee State University.
The new members of the honors society are juniors, seniors and graduate students who have met academic eligibility requirements and received faculty recommendations. The sixteen new members of Upsilon Pi Epsilon Tennessee Alpha Chapter are: Bobby D. Anderson, Jocelyn L. Borgers, Tyler R. Broyles, Marshall B. Couch, Mathew R. Desjardins, Joseph D. Goad, Edwin G. Harris II, Jordon Hinkle, Ibrahim M. Ibrahim, Zane C. Kelley, Christopher T. Phillippe, Raquel A. Prieto, Christopher R. Quillen, John W. Ramsey, Thorin A. Smith, and Clint D. Tompkins.
The Outstanding Student Awards are given to students who are nominated by the faculty and staff based on academic achievements, participation in professional activities, and professional and leadership potential.
The Outstanding Student Awards are given each spring semester to students in each of the following levels: sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate. The Outstanding Computer Science Award is a separate award given to a graduating senior, including those who may have already graduated this current academic year. This year’s winners are:
Jessica Randolph – Outstanding Overall CS Student
Mathew Desjardins – Outstanding Sophomore
Raquel Prieto – Outstanding Junior
Cameron Gunnin – Outstanding Senior
Heather Frye – Outstanding Graduate Student
During the reception, department Chairman Dr. Terry Countermine recognized Dr. Ruth Bailey for her superior teaching contribution to the department. Dr. Bailey has co-taught the Internet Law class with her husband, Dr. Gene Bailey since 2001. Dr. Ron Zucker recognized ETSU’s Association for Computing Machinery chapter for their award at The Summit. ACM received the award for Most Improved Campus Organization.
